Opinion: Will proposed EPA cuts sever Barnegat Bay lifeline?

JANET TAURO / APP.COM – Against a stunning backdrop of Barnegat Bay on the banks of Cattus Island in Toms River Wednesday, Gov. Chris Christie promised $20 million from state and federal sources to halt the destruction, and restore, the dying bay.

But the federal program that would help pay for the long-awaited lifeline for the bay is one of many that President Trump specifically targets in his proposed cuts to the federal Environmental Protection Agency budget by the end of the year.

If Christie is sincere in his stated renewed commitment to the bay, even though he has repeatedly vetoed legislation to curb pollution flowing into the waterway, he could rally congressional support to fight the rolling back of 47 years of hard-won environmental protections …
