Appointment of veteran environmentalist marks shift at New Jersey DEP

SCOTT FALLON / NORTHJERSEY.COM – A veteran environmentalist has been tapped to be second in command of the state Department of Environmental Protection, a move that advocates hope will propel Gov. Phil Murphy’s progressive environmental goals that he laid out last week.

NY/NJ Baykeeper Debbie Mans was appointed Monday as the agency’s deputy commissioner — one of the highest spots ever held in recent years by an environmental advocate — by acting DEP Commissioner Catherine McCabe.

“This is indicative of a sea change,” Doug O’Malley, director of Environment New Jersey, said of Mans’ appointment. “It’s completely breaking with the Christie era.” …
