Editorial: Teterboro Airport expansion could cause flooding in nearby towns

NORTHJERSEY.COM – It’s time for planners to shelve the idea of expanding the footprint of Teterboro Airport by filling in 11 acres of wetlands and adding three hangars. The Environmental Protection Agency has come out with a strongly worded statement against it, declaring that the expansion proposed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Signature Flight Support, one of the airport’s tenants, “will have a substantial and unacceptable impact on wetlands associated with the Hackensack Meadowlands.”

In a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Peter Lopez, the regional administrator for the EPA, wrote about the importance of the natural wetlands, and of how vital they are to the well-being of the environment, as well as the critical role they play in absorbing potential floodwaters …
