Editorial: Will Murphy save us from PSEG’s outrageous nuke subsidy?

TOM MORAN / STAR-LEDGER – Gov. Phil Murphy will soon receive his first truly awful bill from the Legislature, a rush job that provides for a subsidy of $300 million a year to support PSEG’s nuclear power plants in South Jersey.

Unfortunately, the new governor is likely to sign it, in part because it is the pet project of Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester), whose district is home to the plants. The most realistic hope is that Murphy will use his conditional veto to reshape the bill and limit the damage.

The goal of the bill is sensible. The climate crisis demands that we find a way to keep those plants open. They produce enough energy to satisfy nearly half of New Jersey’s demand for electricity, and they emit no carbon. And in one of the poorest sections of the state, the plants provide 2,000 good jobs …
