Editorial: To fee or not to fee, that’s still question on plastic bags

MYCENTRALJERSEY.COM – Quietly, Gov. Phil Murphy did something during recent budget machinations that deserves attention and praise — a simple line-item veto scrapping a plan to divert as much as $23 million in money to be raised through a fee on plastic bags into the general fund.

Of course it isn’t yet clear whether that money will even exist; Murphy has yet to sign into law a bill that would establish a nickel-a-bag fee on single-use plastic and paper bags. If he does, however, we hope that line-item veto is a sign that the revenue generated by the fee will be used as it is supposed to be, for lead abatement …
