NORTHJERSEY.COM – In media vernacular, it’s called a news dump.

When government officials — or anyone, really — have information that needs to be made public but they’d prefer to bury, they strategically release it at a time likely to receive the least attention.

In the old days when newspaper deadlines largely ruled, late Friday afternoon was a favored target, assuring that the news would first hit at the earliest on a Saturday, when readership was smallest.
