Mountains in Ocean County? Yep. And 8,000 acres are being preserved for $15M

STEVE STRUNSKY / NJ.COM – In what environmentalists say is one of New Jersey’s biggest open space acquisitions in recent memory, Ocean County announced it had closed on a $15.5 million deal to buy 8,000 acres of the environmentally sensitive Forked River Mountains straddling Lacey and Ocean townships.

“It’s probably one of the biggest ones we’ve had,” New Jersey Sierra Club Director Jeff Tittel said of the parcel, which is surrounded by other publicly-owned space and creates a contiguous greenway linking the Jersey Shore and the New Jersey Pinelands.

“It is one of the most important areas to be preserved in that area between the Pinelands and the coast,” Tittel said, adding that the area had been in danger of large-scale development. “So, it’s a real critical piece and a victory for open space acquisition.” …
