Opinion: Most people are against trophy hunting, baiting bears, poll says. So why do we allow it?

BRIAN HACKETT / STAR-LEDGER – A recent poll of New Jersey voters reinforces the strong desire of residents to protect our wildlife from gruesome killing contests, to end the trophy hunting of black bears and to ban the cruel shark fin trade — no matter one’s party affiliation, gender or ideology.

Garden State residents were horrified to see the results of an undercover investigation by the Humane Society of the United States last year of wildlife killing contests in Barnegat and upstate New York. The investigation footage showed contest participants slinging the dead bodies of coyotes and foxes into piles and joking about the methods used to lure and kill the animals in an effort to win cash and prizes …
