Editorial: Stop spinning wheels on nuclear waste disposal

SOUTH JERSEY TIMES – One sure way not to make disposal of nuclear waste from New Jersey electricity plants and others less of a problem is to label it as less of a problem.

That seems to be the latest course of the U.S. Department of Energy. By reclassifying some “high-level” waste from bomb-making and electricity generation as lower-level (and therefore less dangerous), DOE hopes to make the material more palatable for neighbors of proposed/unfinished, intermediate/long-term repositories.

If there’s genuine science behind this waste reclassification, that’s legitimate. If, as many suspect, it’s a marketing ploy to make the governments of Nevada, New Mexico, etc. more willing to take the stuff, the strategy is more likely to increase suspicion and strengthen the resolve of the “NIMBY” (not-in-my-backyard) crowds for each site …
