LARRY HIGGS / NJ.COM – Diesel buses stink and even worse, the fumes make respiratory illnesses worse in urban areas, said a group of advocates Thursday morning who want NJ Transit to replace its fleet with electric powered buses by 2040.

Transit and environmental advocates called for the change Thursday morning, outside NJ Transit headquarters in Newark. They cited environmental, health, and economic reason for switching to an all-electric bus fleet, calling cities like Newark “ground zero” for respiratory diseases and premature death rates due to “dirty diesels.” …
