Opinion: Legislature has much environmental work to do in lame duck

ERIC BENSON / APP.COM – There’s no excuse for New Jersey not to be in the forefront of addressing environmental problems like climate change, environmental justice and the lead crisis by establishing aggressive timelines, benchmarks, and policies that would have a clear and positive impact on the environment.

With a Democratic majority in both the Assembly and Senate, and a receptive Gov. Murphy willing to sign progressive climate legislation, there should have been more environmental legislative wins, fewer stalled bills and no backwards slide. That hasn’t happened. On too many occasions pro-environmental bills stalled because they were not even posted for a vote, even if they had a good chance of passage. For these reasons, Clean Water Action is grading its annual scorecard differently this year. Rather than giving individual legislators a grade, the organization is giving the entire Legislature an “F.” …
